Eddie Bert Tribute Site

When Eddie's kids gave him and Molly an anniversary party a couple of years back, they wanted it to be a surprise, but knew the only way they could keep Eddie from taking a gig on the Sunday they'd scheduled the party for was to have someone hire him. A friend was providing the band for the party, and he called Eddie for a club date at the appointed catering hall in Westchester. In those days, Molly went everywhere Eddie worked, so they knew she'd be there too. They arrived fifteen minutes before the "gig" was to begin and heard a band playing on the bandstand. Eddie thought he'd screwed up the starting time and began running toward the bandstand, and then discovered that he was the guest of honor. He was pleased, but I think he also was disappointed at having lost a gig.

One night before a gig I was talking to Eddie about horns. I always admire the different horns he brings on the gig. One of my favorites is the beautiful Sterling King 2B that Quentin Jackson used to own. Also Eddie's gold plated 2B is a beauty. This night I had a "new" horn. A custom Lawler. I asked Eddie if he wanted to try it out? He said "If I like it will you sell it to me?" As I loved the horn I said no. Eddie replied "Then I don't want to try it"

Many years ago in a big band sitting next to Eddie, he jokingly made fun of my vintage Conn 6H. At that time it really did look quite "Vintage" and Eddie asked me why I hadn't polished it. So I handed the horn to Eddie and said try it! He played one note. Handed it back to me and said "Don't change a thing"

In 1974 I took as lesson with Eddie in NY. I asked him what I should do to play high notes. I got the most sensible answer you can imagine: "Find a mouthpiece that feels comfortable, and learn to play it". Simple as that.
